Helicopter infrared survey of campus steam lines

On the evening of Monday, May 11, a helicopter could be heard hovering over several parts of campus. This was part of an all-campus survey using infrared thermography, targeted mainly at the underground steam lines to look for leaks and/or places where the insulation has been compromised. It also looked for potential water leaks in our large flat roofs.  While the report has not yet been issued, the initial impression was that only a few potential weak areas were found, and the leaks were minimal.

Below is one of the infrared images, showing compromised insulation (and not a live steam leak) where the steam line runs in front of Lansing-Chapman Rink over to The Log.

The survey will be used to target repairs to tighten things up for next winter.

In addition to the steam line, you can see the infrared camera is sensitive enough to see cool shadows left where cars were parked during the day, shading the pavement from the sun.
