Tanja Srebotnjak, Executive Director (she/her/hers)

Tanja has worked on sustainability strategy and operations and in a variety of settings.  She obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in statistics from Dortmund Technical University, Germany and the University of Auckland, New Zealand before joining the UN Statistics Division to work on environmental statistics and indicators. Seeing the growing need for data-driven sustainability assessment and decision-making, she pursued doctoral research in environmental statistics and policy from the Yale School of the Environment and was the director of the Yale-Columbia Environmental Performance Index (EPI). Since then she has led research, education and strategic initiatives to address sustainability, climate and environmental health issues in academia and K-12 education as well as for environmental advocacy and think tank organizations in the U.S. and Europe.

Mike Evans, Deputy Director of Campus Sustainability (he/him/his)

Mike joined the Zilkha Center for the Environment team in 2014.  Prior to his time at Williams, he worked in nonprofits focusing on food security, youth empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and food justice in Boston, Austin, and Salt Lake City.  Mike received a B.A. in African and African American Studies from Dartmouth College and a M.A. in Community Leadership from Westminster College.

Sarah Gardner has been at Williams since January 2002, teaching environmental studies and managing the former Center for Environmental Studies. Her areas of expertise include environmental planning, city planning, rural development, community development, state and local environmental politics and policy, renewable energy, climate policy, farm and food systems planning, conservation and land protection, agricultural practice and policy.  In the past decade, her work has focused primarily on the regional farm & food system, farm support & agricultural advocacy and documentary film production. Sarah’s current documentary project: “My Town” is an ethnographic exploration of the transformation of rural America. She holds a B.A. from Smith College, an M.P.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York.

Elise brings a range of land management, education, field research, project management and office administration experience to her position at the Hopkins Memorial Forest. Her past positions include working as an environmental educator at multiple non-profits, working as a scientist and project manager for an environmental consulting company, and most recently, serving as the director of a land trust. Elise has a B.A. in Biology from Williams College (’06) and a Masters in Environmental Management (MEM) from Duke University.

Alex brings valuable expertise in student engagement, environmental education, and a dedication to sustainable food systems and addressing food insecurity. She holds a B.A. in both Environmental Studies and Geological Sciences, as well as a recently completed M.S. in Sustainable Communities from Binghamton University.
