This summer Zilkha interns monitored the energy use of fridges and freezers in the science quad. Many of the appliances, though in working condition, were quite old and energy inefficient. In order to find the worst offenders, energy meters were left on 13 fridges in Biology and 6 in other departments for a 24-hr period. The most wasteful units were identified and interns recommended cost-effective Energy Star rated replacements. Savings are estimated at $4600 a year. Meanwhile, the Zilkha Center will tirelessly continue to hunt down energy hog fridges and freezers in science quad. They have nowhere to hide!
