January 2022
Dear CES Alumni and Friends,
The Center for Environmental Studies is seeking environmental internship opportunities for our students. CES has funding for students for unpaid environmental summer internships and research positions, and your help in connecting them to organizations is much appreciated.
Please send along summer postings at the organization where you work, where you serve on a board, or volunteer. I also invite you to pass this notice along to friends or colleagues who work for the environment. We have dozens of capable, passionate, smart and hardworking students who are looking for environmental summer internships!
And these internships can be unpaid.
Thanks to generous funding from alumni over the years, the Center for Environmental Studies provides stipends to students (assuming they are in good standing and the position meets our criteria) who find unpaid environmental internships or research in the public and non-profit and academic sectors. We define “environmental” broadly to include not only the customary fields of conservation, ecology, environmental management, renewable energy, climate, policy and activism, but also environmental health, research, urban planning and policy, community organizing, social justice, agriculture and environmental education, and related fields.
Positions may be in the US or abroad, although we do not provide extra funding for travel. The positions must be career-oriented to be eligible for CES funding and if manual labor is involved, it must be less than 50% of the time.
More details: Internships may be 5-10 weeks long, they usually begin in mid or late June, funding for full-time work is $TBD/week, and students must receive a firm offer in writing (including dates of the position) before applying for CES funds. In order to apply for funding from CES, the student must include a copy of the offer letter from the organization offering them the internship.
Dates:
Please send internship postings by January 31, if possible. Students should have an offer by approx. March 10 to apply for our funding (deadline is March 17 there is a later deadline (if there is funding left) in early April).
Housing:
For many students, finding housing for the period of the internship is an obstacle, so if free or affordable housing is available or if it’s easy to find, please be sure to mention this in the internship posting. It will help attract a student to the position.
What to Include in an Internship Description:
Please send internship descriptions as a “Word” document and as an attachment to your email, because we re-post them on the CES website. Include: position description, location, dates of the internship (can be flexible), and contact information, housing or transportation situation, as well as details about how to apply.

With warm wishes for a safe and healthy winter,
